The eleven Windmills of “La Plana” district, one windmill dates back to the 14th Century and the remaining ones from the 18th Century. The windmills of “La Plana” district have a cylindrical form with height of approx. 7 m and a diameter of over 6 m.
The interior has two floors, a ground floor used as a warehouse and an upper floor, buttressed by an ashlar sandstone vault with quarter-sphere shell niche which housed sturdy Kermes oak wooden mechanisms which moved the heavy millstones and supported the windmill blades fastened to a horizontal axis. This all disappeared at the end of the 19th Century.
Today, they are abandoned without blades. Their function was to mill the wheat, taking advantage of the wind energy to move the windmill blades. Of this numerous set, three are municipally owned and their restoration and recovery has been planned.
Another exemple of this kind of construction is the “windmill de la Safranera”, built in 19th Century.
