The Moors and Christians Festivities have become a deep-seated tradition in the entire South-eastern region of the peninsula. Full of history, these festivities have become highly popular due to their colourful and spectacular pageantry.
They commemorate a shared past of coexistence and struggle between two cultures, the Moors and the Christians, and represent the conflicts which took place during the Moors invasion and the subsequent Christian reconquest.
In Xàbia, these festivities are celebrated in the third week of July in the Duanes de la Mar district. During these dates, colourful parades of the different Moors and Christian associations take place as well as the scenic re-enactment of the historical events such as the Muslim invasion by sea, the capture of the castle by the Christian and the surrender of the Muslim troops.
