The majestically powerful Montgó mountain rises above Xàbia, Dènia and Ondara and reaches a maximum height of 753 m above sea level. Its East-West orientation and the large sandstone walls define its features, which jointly with its height, proximity to the sea and climate have made the Montgó environment into one of the most exceptional places on the Levante coast. The zone’s peculiar orography with large walls and canyons as well as the intense contrast between its two vertical sections configure a series of habitats where it is possible discover its diverse natural wealth. The bio-geographical position, border and boundary between the different natural domains, its paleobio-geographical history and current weather conditions have permitted many relic species to remain intact in the Montgó area and it has one of the most important plant diversity in the Western Mediterranean Region with over 800 species. Consequently, the Valencian Regional Government declared this zone as the “Montgó Natural Park” (Decree 25/1987) in May 1987, which includes the cape, Cabo de San Antonio, and the plains, Las Planas, which serve as the union point between the coast and this solid Mountain formation. In reference to animal species, we highlight the presence of the Bonelli eagle (Aquila fasciata) and a pair of Eurasian Eagle Owls (Bubo bubo) in the Natural Park’s rock formations, where there are also bird species such as the common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus). In the marine cliffs, it is possible to observe the Audouin’s gull (Ichthyaetus audouinii), Yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis), Mediterranean gull (Larus melanocephalus) and the European shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) among other species.
