The Franco regime’s repression against Spanish midwives was an authentic "witch hunt" that took place during the Spanish Civil war and during the Post-war period. The midwives with professional expertise about sexual and reproductive health care as well as employment autonomy had a direct confrontation with the model of the submissive women that was promoted by the Franco regime. They were persecuted and suffered reprisals for their alleged involvement in abortions, the communication of anti-contraceptive methods and in general, for playing an active role in society beyond masculine control.

The consequences were tragic...
